    Specifies principles and testing procedures for determining, by means of the guarded hot plate or heat flow meter methods, the thermal resistance of test specimens having a thermal resistance of not less than 0, 5 m2. The DTC and DTC thermal conductvitity meters provide direct measurement of thermal conductivity based on the ASTM E guarded heat flow meter method. The DTC meter consists of a guard furnace surrounding the test stack to mitigate the heat transfer effects along the sample edges thereby avoiding measurement errors.

    The Laser Flash Method (LFA) is a well established technique for the determination of thermal diffusivity, in which the increase in the sample’s temperature resulting from the absorption from a laser flash is measured. Shirtliffe, National Research Council of Canada, and R. Tye. A Combined Guarded Hot Plate and Heat Flow Meter Method was developed and tested for absolute thermal conductivity tests of moderate thermal conductivity (up to ~10 W/mK) materials.

The Guarded Hot Plate uses a direct measurement of the electrical power supplied to the hot plate rather than heat flow meter signals from a Heat Flux Transducer. Using an advanced single-sample test method, GHP allows for fast cycle time yet guarantees accuracy, is easy to use, and provides stable, uniform temperature control.
